The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) released its 2023 edition of the "Art of Science" showcase, which is a gallery of images noteworthy for both the scientific value they represent as well as the aesthetic beauty they display. An image of an SPL electrospray emitter was included in the gallery. The featured emitter is a porous glass emitter shaped through a combination of laser ablation and wet etching processes to form an extremely smooth, precise, and uniform array of microscopic tips. Ionic liquid propellant is fed through these structures to the apex where the high electric field it experiences results in ion emission and acceleration to produce thrust.
